Program Description

PARC Detox is a CARF accredited, medically monitored detoxification and assessment unit for adults (18 and up). Individuals who are diagnosed substance abusing or substance dependent are admitted to the PARC Detox. The services provided at PARC Detox include detoxification from drugs of abuse, assessment to determine the appropriate level of care, referrals and placements for continuing care.

Days/Hours of Operation

Seven days per week, 24 hours per day

Admission Criteria

  • Client is an alcohol or other drug dependent or abusing adult and in need of medically monitored detoxification and evaluation as determined by the Registered Nurse and admitting physician.
  • Client shows a history or exhibits signs and symptoms indicating that they need more structure than outpatient treatment (examples include that the client misses work, gets intoxicated on a daily basis, etc
  • Alternative treatment strategies at lesser levels of care have either been exhausted, are unavailable, or have been ruled out as unlikely to benefit the individual.
  • Client is presently in physical, emotional or social distress as a result of his/her alcohol or other drug use.
  • Client can function in a structured program without posing significant risk to self or others.
  • Client does not exhibit any of the following as determined by the Registered Nurse during the nursing assessment or Physician during the history and physical:
    • Suicide or homicide attempt in the past fifteen days or suicidal or homicidal intent currently.
    • Present medical conditions requiring intensive medical care or monitoring for example unstable angina or insulin dependent diabetes.
    • Intolerable aggressive, violent or abusive behavior.
    • Highly communicable diseases such as untreated tuberculosis, meningitis or hepatitis.
    • Status epilipticus or experiencing seizures.
    • Pregnancy (unless safely detoxed for 5 days at a medical facility or accompanied by a written statement of medical stability regarding fetal status and regular fetal monitoring during the period of withdrawal symptoms). Women past their 28th week of pregnancy will be referred to a medical facility.
    • Coma; not responding to painful stimuli; signs of acute CNS localization; respiratory distress; signs of acute pulmonary, cardiac, renal or hepatic failure; non-reduced fractures; internal hemorrhage; acute infectious process; acute uncontrollable psychotic reactions, insulin dependent diabetes, or unstable angina.

Referral/Admissions Process

Voluntary referrals are accepted by calling 304-399-7776 and scheduling an assessment appointment. If requested, voluntary admissions need to bring the following items to their admission assessment appointment with the Registered Nurse at PARC Detox (1) results of laboratory tests including urine drug screening, urinalysis, complete blood count, complete chemical profile, hepatitis screening and serum pregnancy test if applicable (2) a written statement of medical stability for detoxification from a physician.

Individuals who have legal documentation of a formal adjudication process on the basis of addiction are admitted as Involuntary Emergency Medical Commitment (or IEMC) status provided that they are medically stable as determined by the Registered Nurse on duty. These documents include an application, certification by a licensed psychologist or physician and a probable cause order. Individuals who are pending the outcome of a formal adjudication process are detained at PARC Detox under Detainee status.
